Let's all take a moment to reflect...

First, let me begin by expressing my deepest sympathies to all of those affected by these heinous acts committed by those involved in our Nations Capital.  My heartfelt condolences go out to the family of Corporal Cirillo and his family and friends.

None of us will be able to understand the circumstance behind these tragic events.  They defy logic, and reason.  They even defy the laws and customs of the Islamic Faith.

These extremist organizations are all-too-often finding these lost souls and giving them something to cling to.  It is very much like the gang problems we face in modern times within cities all across our country.  They give these people a sense of belonging, and radicalize them in the process.  Often times through coercion, threats of violence against themselves or their families, and other despicable acts.  The radicalized person can feel that they have no other choice, or can be sucked in by these extremely twisted and warped ideologies.

The powers of evil within these organizations have now spilled across the borders, beyond the confines of far away lands such as Syria and Iraq.  Either through the acts of sympathizers or the organizations themselves.  This unfortunately, has the potential to become a very sobering reality in the weeks, months, or years to come.

Canadians should and will band together, to comfort those who are in need, and show strength and resolve against those who are responsible.  Throughout these terrible acts, were also prime examples of heroism, self-sacrifice and compassion that truly make me feel proud to be Canadian.

We as Canadians have unfortunately gotten a taste of what the vast majority of the population of Afghanistan experience on an almost daily bases.  In Canada, this will be news for a significant amount of time, days and weeks to come.  The Nation will take a great deal of time to come to grips what what has transpired.

In Afghanistan, this would be a flashover on a security report, and we would be back to business as usual within a couple of hours at most.  I am not making these statements to make light in any way of what has happened.  Only to show the differences and indeed how fortunate we are to live where we do.

I once heard a statement that "A BAD DAY in Canada is MUCH BETTER than a GOOD DAY in most of the rest of the world."

I think most of you that are reading this just from what you see on the news and hear about can agree with this statement.

In spite of all the terrible things that happen in Afghanistan.  Almost everywhere we flew to today, the people that we have the chance to work with, be it UN Staff, Air Traffic Controllers, Security Staff, Refuelers, Staff at our Housing Compound, and many more,  ALL express their sympathies to all Canadians and wish for us better times in the future.  They all say Canada is a wonderful country and does not deserve these things to be happening.  To which I always responded with thanks in kind, and would say that "No country deserves these things to happen to them.  People should not have to live in fear.  Wherever it happens it is WRONG!"

So, Canadians, let us band together.  Show these people that they will not win, that they will not defeat us or get us down.  Let's get back to having "Good Days" in Canada...

The True North Strong and Free!
