We had to go for our UN Identification Cards and Security Briefings.
The drive was interesting to say the least, very much like Africa, where it's pretty well a free-for-all. There are no lanes, and people will weave in and out or cut in front of you anytime. There is a lot of horn honking just to say "Hey I'm here get out of my way!"
We passed a couple of Military Convoys as well, where you must remain well out of the way and do as directed by the turret-man in the vehicles. You must not follow the convoys or approach too rapidly or you will be fired upon. The convoy lead has a siren on his vehicle to move traffic out of the way.
It was an amazing experience and quite the interesting city. Most of the streets are well paved. Some though, are very narrow and in very poor condition.
The free-for-all nature of the traffic can lead to several traffic jams. Which eventually do resolve themselves, but it can be a little unnerving sitting in the middle of the city, totally exposed in a "soft skinned" (non-armored) vehicle.
The UN compound is in the middle of downtown, and approximately a 30 minute drive from The Baron.
It was a wonderful experience though, and I do hope I get to do it again.
All of our briefings are now completed and I will begin flying tomorrow. Looking forward to it.
