Welcome To The Baron

WELCOME TO...

My new home for the next few weeks.

A short drive, from the airport (less than 5 minutes), brings you down a road that's LINED with Concrete walls.   MASSIVE WALLS, about 15 20 feet high.

The walls all have barbed wire AND razor wire on the top.  There are at least 2 walls, probably more with lower walls and "funnels" to allow you only to proceed in one direction.

The roadway in is lined with large speed bumps and "Czech Hedgehogs" and guards carrying automatic weapons.

Example of Czech Hedgehogs

I must be careful what I can discuss with you in regards to security measures that are in place here.  At this point all I can say, is that there are several checkpoints on the way in with bomb sniffing dogs, and vehicle searches.

The entire compound is surrounded by walls with barbed wire, and razor wire on top.  Not just one, but both.  The walls also have massive sandbags on the inside.

All I can say is, that if any nefarious characters were to try and get in here, it would not end well for them.

With all of these measure in place, I will most likely be unable to take photos within the compound here, for obvious reasons.

The compound is very well equipped.  Let's list some of the amenities:
  • Bar / Lounge
  • Restaurant
  • Mini-Mart
  • Soccer Field
  • Garden
  • Squash Courts
  • Ping Pong
  • Swimming Pool
  • Basketball
  • Public BBQ's For Resident Use

We had a BBQ in honor of the crew leaving, and us arriving.  It was a wonderful "Welcome To Afghanistan"  T-Bone Steaks and Sausage with melons and baguettes from in town.  All of the meat came from a local butcher and was very good!

One of our long-time friends threw the BBQ for us.  He is an American that's been in Afghanistan for 8 years now, and will be my neighbor across the hall.

That's about all for now.  I'll check into the picture situation and see what I can do, if anything!
